If the bulging belly is only from overfeeding, then it’s usually just constipation/swim bladder stress, not dropsy (so less serious).

✅ Step-by-Step Care

  1. Stop feeding for 2 days

    • Let your betta’s system clear out naturally.

  2. Epsom Salt Bath (optional, but helps)

    • Dissolve 1 teaspoon of Epsom salt (pure magnesium sulfate, no fragrance) in 2 liters of dechlorinated water.

    • Place betta in this solution for 10–15 mins once a day for 1–2 days.

    • Works as a mild laxative + reduces swelling.

  3. After fasting, feed light & fiber-rich

    • Offer a tiny piece of boiled, peeled pea (soft inside only) — this helps move things along.

    • Then switch back to high-quality betta pellets in small amounts (2–3 pellets, once or twice daily).

  4. Avoid overfeeding going forward

    • Remember: bettas have tiny stomachs (about the size of their eye!).

    • Better to underfeed slightly than overfeed.

  5. Maintain good water quality

    • Do a 25–30% water change to keep stress low.
